State Affairs Hears Statutory Employer Testimony

The Senate State Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock), heard testimony August 23, 2006 on statutory employer and related issues. The Texas Civil Justice League was represented by Jay Gibson, legal counsel for Dow Chemical, on a panel that included representatives from Texas Association of Defense Counsel, Texans for Lawsuit Reform, and the Texas Trial Lawyers Association.

The League urged legislative discretion, pending the outcome of the Summers v. Entergy Gulf States, Inc. case, which is set for oral arguments before the Texas Supreme Court September 27, 2006. The League submitted written testimony, which will be available on the web site (http://www.tcjl.com) and will provide a written position statement for the final committee report.
