State Representative Jimmie Don Aycock announced today that he will seek reelection to the Texas House of Representatives in 2014. Aycock is currently Chair of the House Committee on Public Education and serves on the Culture, Recreation & Tourism Committee. Jimmie Don represents House District 54, comprised of Killeen, Salado, Lampasas, part of Fort Hood, and surrounding areas.

“We made significant improvements for Texas students this past session,” said Aycock, “and I want to continue to work with my fellow legislators to find workable, long-term solutions for our water, roads and education.”

Aycock is the author of House Bill 5, passed unanimously by both the Texas House and the Texas Senate and signed into law by Governor Rick Perry earlier this year. HB 5 fundamentally changes the graduation requirements for high school seniors, reduces the number of standardized tests from 15 to 5, and establishes “endorsements,” or graduation pathways for both college-bound and career-bound students.

“HB 5 was very widely supported by administrators, teachers and parents,” notes Aycock, “and I want to be there to work with TEA (the Texas Education Agency) and other state and district leaders as they begin to implement these new policies across Texas.”
