Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Barry Smitherman has endorsed Dan Branch over Ken Paxton for Texas attorney general.

Smitherman, who finished third in the March 4 AG contest, made his announcement via social media (read his statement in full below).

“Dan Branch has been a practicing attorney for 30 years, and is admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court—the two courts of greatest relevance in Texas’ continuing battles against the Obama Administration,” Smitherman said.

Paxton, a state senator from McKinney, finished first in the GOP primary with a double-digit lead over Branch, a state representative from Dallas.

They now meet in a May 27 runoff. The winner faces Houston Democrat Sam Houston in November.
