The House Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence met April 18, 2012 to discuss interim charges related to Alternate Litigation Funding and Corporate Governance.

  • Study best practices regarding corporate governance. Make recommendations on the confidentiality of communications to ombudsmen in order to provide more protections to complaining parties.
  • Study the public policy implications of lawsuit lending and its effects on the civil justice system.

The League was asked to testify on the second charge regarding  the use of alternative litigation funding.  League counsel, George Christian, wrote a comprehensive paper on the legal background of ALF in Texas which was provided to committee members.  TCJL’s General Counsel, Lisa Kaufman testified on behalf of the League along with U.S. Chamber attorney, John Beisner and Charles Shewmake, a representative of League member, BNSF Railway.  All three spoke of the numerous pitfalls of the practice.  You can hear the testimony at:
