Former Harris County Commissioner and Controller Sylvia Garcia polled about 45% of the vote in Saturday’s special election to replace Sen. Mario Gallegos (D-Houston), who died last fall. State Rep. Carol Alvarado finished second in the voting with nearly 42%. Governor Rick Perry will set the date of the runoff election, which could be held in late February or early March.
