It was Black Monday for patent holders as they rushed to file what’s believed to be a record number of infringement suits on the last day before higher pleading standards kick in.

Some 241 new cases were filed Nov. 30, according to data compiled by defensive patent aggregator RPX Corp. That’s more than 10 times the usual level, and it eclipses the 190 filed on April 23, 2014, amid patent reform legislation, thought to be the previous record. Patent suits began surging in mid-November, with 596 filed during the last two weeks of the month compared with 203 for the last two weeks of October, according to RPX data.
