According to a June 14 report in the Galveston Daily News, more than 50,000 individual claims have been filed in Galveston County against BP for alleged injuries resulting from an emissions event that occurred in April and May of 2010. The 53,800 claims are bundled in 538 separate lawsuits with 100 plaintiffs apiece. One of the lead plaintiff’s firms is the Buzbee Law Firm, headed by Tony Buzbee. BP denies that the emissions event caused any harm to the surrounding community. Buzbee told the newspaper that the first trial could be held before the end of the year.
