Former House Rep. Delwin Jones announced Monday that he will be joining the race to replace former State Senator Robert Duncan to represent Texas District 28.
“Robert Duncan and I have served many years together in the Texas Legislature and I will continue the invaluable conservative legislative experience and leadership that reflects the diverse interests of the 28th Senatorial District,” Jones said in a press release. “I believe that my years of legislative service, my farming experience, my business experience, and my conservative philosophy make me the best qualified person to represent Senate District 28. We can ill afford to lose the important conservative clout we have always had in Austin,” Jones said.
A former state representative, Jones lost his District 83 Texas House seat Charles Perry in 2010, another announced candidate for Duncan’s former seat.
Jones and Perry join the campaign trail against Plainview native and former Texas Tech Chancellor Jodey Arrington, former Sweetwater mayor Greg Wortham and Wolfforth resident Epifano Garza.
Duncan resigned from the Senate to become chancellor of Texas Tech.
Gov. Rick Perry has set the special election for the district 28 seat for Sept. 9, giving candidates less than two months to campaign.
According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Plainview’s Arrington has raised the most campaign funds thus far, bringing in more than $200,000 during the first reporting period. Perry has reported raising $130,000 in the first six months of the year and having $195,000 available from previous years.
