Legislation authorizing a joint House-Senate study committee to make recommendations regarding judicial selection in Texas has passed both chambers and is on its way to the Governor’s desk. HB 2772 by Rep. Justin Rodriguez (D-San Antonio) and Sen. Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) calls for an interim committee made up of six members of the House and six members of the Senate, including the chairs of House Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence, House Criminal Jurisprudence, Senate Jurisprudence, and Senate Criminal Justice. The committee will be evenly balanced between Republicans and Democrats. HB 2772 gives the committee a broad charge to study methods of selection for the state trial and appellate courts and recommend any specific changes to the system to the 2015 Legislature.
