HJR 81 by Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo) would extend the term of office of a district judge from 4 to 6 years and provide that a judge appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy shall run for election in the next general election for state officers to fill a full term. The proposed constitutional amendment would be submitted to the voters in next November’s general election and would apply to terms of office beginning on or after January 1, 2016. Rep. Raymond has just been reappointed to the House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee.
