KERRVILLE, Texas (AP) – Republican Rep. Harvey Hilderbran says he is in the race for Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

The chairman of the House Ways and Means committee told supporters Monday that if elected he will bring new ideas to the office responsible for collecting and disbursing the state’s revenues.

Hilderbran will face Katy Sen. Glenn Hegar and tea party activist Debra Medina in the Republican primary next year.

As the Ways and Means chair, Hilderbran was responsible for writing tax policy in the Texas House. If elected to the statewide office, he promised better customer service and protection from IRS abuse.

Hilderbran has experience in real estate, ranching, business and advertising. He is a 1983 graduate to Texas Tech University and has served in the Legislature since 1988.
